DAYTON -- When students showed up to class Friday morning they had to walk through a set of tables designed to search them and their belongings. This was just one of several security measures Horizon Science Academy has in place after they discovered a threatening message in the girlâs bathroom.
âIt said, âIâm going to kill everyoneââ said Judith Hiliski, Dean of Students at Horizon Science Academy.
Itâs the first ever threat made at Horizon Science Academy, and school officials are taking it very seriously.
âIt might be some students playing games but still we canât take chancesâ said Ugur Zengince, Director, Horizon Science Academy.
A sixth grade student noticed the threat in a stall in the girlâs bathroom at the end of school Thursday. Dean of students, Juduth Hiliski was the first staff member that student told.
âIâve lived through Columbine, and I know what just happened in Connecticut, so I take it seriouslyâ said Hiliski.
With armed deputies on hand to reassure students and parents, this threat comes just as the school enhanced its security measures by adding a buzzing system at the front door.
Security cameras were also added throughout the building and can be accessed by a school administrator on any computer within the school.
To help weed out the culprit, students had to submit writing samples considering the threat contained a misspelled word.
âDid you find that misspelled wordâ asked ABC22/Fox 45 Kavontae Smalls.
âYes I did, there was one student who spelled the misspelled word exactly the same wayâ said Hiliski.
âNothing is really looked at as a joke, whether it is written on a wall, a piece of paper or if itâs verbally stated, everything needs to be taken seriouslyâ said James Jackson, Dean of Students, Horizon Science Academy.
When the student is caught, they will likely be expelled and could face inducing panic charges. School officials have narrowed down suspects, and have contacted parents.
