DAYTON -- An overtime contract has been unanimously approved by Dayton City Commissioners between the Dayton Police and the new managers of Summit Square Apartments.

Under this contract, tenants will pay extra in order to have extra policing from officers.

Summit Square Apartments is under new management and all the old tenants have moved out.  Managers are looking to keep their new tenants as safe as possible.

DAYTON -- Bullets flying with kids in the crossfire, fights, stabbings and drug deals. It is all happening in a local neighborhood, and now the
owners are taking a stand - trying to make it safer.

"We might have one or two quiet days but other than that it's always crazy out here," said one neighbor who did not want to talk to our crews on camera.

Neither did her neighbor. And the reason? They are scared.

"The only time I do come out is to take my trash out or check my mail. Other than that, I stay in," said the woman who's lived in Summit Square
about three years. Her son was right by the window when it was shot out last Summer here at the Summit Square Apartments.

Both neighbors were just feet from this violence early Monday morning. More than 20 rounds were fired and a bullet hit a woman's ankle. You can see the evidence of the fire fight on the car, and the side of the home near where they sleep.

"I have two babies, you know, that's kind of scary... When the summertime comes, it's nothing nice at all. There's something going on every other night," said the neighbor.

The owners are hoping to hire off-duty Dayton police officers to help deter crime. They are willing to pay the city $84,000 through the rest of the
year.

"It will make it a little bit safer."

"We have a lot of kids that come outside and play... I just really hope that it makes it better."

Hope is all they have -- that the added presence will help stop the bullets from flying, and make everyone a little safer.

The City Commission will vote tomorrow to accept or deny the request. It is expected to pass. This same initiative has been successful in other
struggling apartment communities.
