OXFORD (AP) -- Longtime Miami University basketball coach Charlie Coles has died at 71, the school says.

No cause of death was reported immediately by the school on Friday, but Coles had a history of heart issues.

Coles retired in March 2012 after 16 seasons at the school. He finished with a 263-224 record, which is the most wins in school history. He had a career record of 355-308 over 22 seasons, including his time at Central Michigan.

At the time of his retirement, Athletic Director Brad Bates called Coles, "an iconic figure in the history of Miami University as a student, athlete, server, leader, mentor and coach."

He died at his home in Oxford.
