DAYTON -- A man is fighting for his life after crashing into a tree. It happened about 2 a.m. Tuesday on North James H. McGee Boulevard near Rosedale Avenue.

Police say a car was traveling about 100 mph when it crashed into the tree. The two people inside were taken to the hospital. The driver is said to have life-threatening injuries. The passenger sustained several broken bones, according to police.

A witness said the car appeared to be racing another car at the time of the crash.

"Me and my cousin was walking back from the store, and I seen the car doing about a hundred coming toward us and I decided to jump out of the way and all of a sudden it just smacked the tree," the man said, who chose not to provide a name.

Police are looking at speed as a factor and also checking to see if alcohol played a role. They said the car had just left a nearby bar.

James H. McGee between Rosedale and Edison Street was shut down for about three hours as crews cleaned up the mess.
