DAYTON -- Police have identified the suspect in Tuesday's armed robbery of the North Main Super Duper market.

Dayton Police say Rontay A. Cottrell, 30, was seen by someone at the store pointing a gun at the clerk. When Cottrell exited the Super Duper and saw police, he reportedly ran around the side of the building and a Dayton Police detective pursued him, and ordering Cottrell to stop.

"This detective could clearly see that Cottrell had a gun in his right hand while running," a Dayton Police Department statement reads. "At the rear of 85 Fernwood Avenue, Cottrell stopped running and pointed his gun at the detective. The detective fired his duty weapon one time at Cottrell, missing him. Cottrell turned and continue running with this detective continuing to give chase."

Cottrell was caught at 49 Pointview Avenue by members of the SOFAST task force.

Police say Cottrell had a loaded 9mm handgun. He had also covered both of his hands with duct tape.

Cottrell faces aggravated robbery, kidnapping and felonious assault charges.

The detective who shot at Cottrell has been placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy. Police had initially said the detectives actions were justified.
