KETTERING -- As you drive down the road in this heat, you will undoubtedly see a lot stranded cars.
"This is actually the third one today," said AAA fleet driver Shawn Cobble.
We rode along with AAA to respond to the dead cars on the side of the road.
"Maybe flat tire, I think I had a couple dead batteries," said Andrea Hudson of Kettering.
"Sometimes you can get in your car, everything seems fine, you can drive 15 minutes to the store and you come back out five minutes later and it's dead," said Cobble.
AAA says they responded to a couple hundred of these dead battery calls every day in the summertime. About 75 or them are heat-related. They jump and replace several more cars in the summer than winter because of the heat.
With hot temperatures mixed with a hot engine, these temps can actually get close to 200 degrees, killing the battery.
"Heat damages batteries, the internal parts of the batteries, it tears them up pretty bad. It breaks them down on the inside. You can physically look at the battery and say well it doesn't look that bad but inside it's falling apart. It's not going to function like it should," said Cobble.
So what can you do?
"I go twice a year, get a tuneup and inspection in the summertime and then in the fall," said Hudson.
Also, it's not a bad idea to take your battery to your mechanic to have it charged every once in a while.
And when you see corrosion start to build?
"Just get the corrosion off with a little baking soda and water," said Hudson. "That will keep the corrosion from building up on it. You can check that every once in a while."
"It could save you from actually being stuck on the side of the road," said Cobble.
AAA will assist nearly 1.6 million motorists with dead batteries during the summer driving season, replacing more than 500,000 batteries at the roadside.
