DAYTON -- We're right in the middle of a heat wave and, now is not the time to have your air conditioner break down.
We caught up with McAfee Heating and Air Conditioning during the hottest part of the day on Wednesday. Technicians say preventive maintenance is key to not becoming a victim to the heat.
They also say you should be changing your air filters every month.
And, you need to watch the temperature.
"If you turn the temperature too far down on your thermostat, most air conditioning units are only sized to maintain a 20-degree temperature difference from what it is outside to what it is inside," said McAfee technician Chris Bryant.
Bryant was working on the home of Jerry Cemes of Miami Township.
Cemes' problem was simple, he had a broken capacitor, which is a common part to fail.
"We have every fan we own cranked up, as long as we stay under or near a fan we're doing alright," said Cemes.
Bryant says you should turn your AC unit off if it fails until help can arrive.
He suggests having preventive maintenance done in the spring, but if you missed out, it's better to have it done now than later when your A/C breaks.
