DAYTON -- Two suspects got in a hairy situation Wednesday when they reportedly stole about $500 in hair extensions at a West Third Street store but left an iPhone behind.

Police say a Westown Shopping Center security guard noticed a suspicious red Dodge Intrepid in the parking lot. He said the car had no front license plate and the rear plate was covered with a leopard print T-shirt.

The guard, identified as Charlie Bryant, said he saw someone run from the Wigs & Things store with a basket of merchandise. The police incident report provided no suspect descriptions. That person reportedly go in the car, which then fled behind the shopping center.

Bryant said the suspect threw the just-stolen merchandise out the window as they drove away. He also said a 4- or 5-year-old child was standing in the back seat of the car as they drove away.

Police say the suspect who stole the basket of items also left an iPhone in the store. It was described as white with a peach-colored case adorned with several metal spikes.

Police said a woman, but not the suspect who was in the store earlier, came into the store after the theft asking about the iPhone. That phone is now logged into the Dayton Police Department's property room.

Bryant said he collected all the stolen merchandise that had been tossed out of the car and returned it to the store. Store employees say they have recovered everything that had been stolen.
