DAYTON -- Dayton police shoot and kill a man near Island Metro Park early Sunday evening.

Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl says the two Dayton sergeants who fired at the unidentified man are on paid administrative leave Sunday night per department protocol.

Biehl says the two officers fired several shots and at least one hit the 34-year-old man in the hip area.

Officers responded to Keowee and Helena Street area Sunday night after several calls came into dispatch of a man walking around with a rifle under a blanket, another caller said there was a man in the street with a rifle and was pointing the gun at cars.

When the sergeants arrived Chief Biehl says the man pointed a SKS rifle at officers.

That's when they fired shots.

The chief says upon initial investigation it appears his officers acted appropriate.

Homicide detectives will do the initial investigation and then it will go for an administrative investigation by professional standards.

Cheif Biehl says the department has responded to multiple suicide calls from this man in the past. But, could not say what led to Sunday nights events. He says the rifle carried by the man can carry multiple rounds in it.

"We certainly know it is a possibility any day that a police officer may be confronted with a situation where you have to use deadly force. It's a day we hope will never come, but will come to someone. It came tonight to two police sergeants with the Dayton Police Department," said Chief Biehl.

Biehl says there were multiple witnesses nearby and they are interviewing all of them.
