UPDATE: Kentucky School Bus That Crashed Was Overdue for Inspection

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky officials say the bus that crashed while carrying high school students yesterday had not received a state inspection in at least two years.

DeWayne Koch, a spokesman with Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, says charter buses like this one undergo random roadside inspections by state officers.

However, charter bus operators are required to conduct their own annual safety inspections.  State officials want to review those records for the crashed bus, which was operated by Commonwealth Bus Service & Transportation.  The company did not return calls seeking comment.

Police are looking into possible mechanical failure as a cause.

Earlier coverage:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A bus full of high school students crashed Tuesday on a Kentucky highway.

Thirty students from Waggener High School, along with four adults, were taken to several hospitals.

Everyone is reported to be in stable condition.

Police say a tire blew on the bus before its lost control, veering across three lanes of traffic and hitting a concrete median.

The students, who will be juniors and seniors this fall, were on their way back to Louisville after visiting Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.
