Beat the Heat Without Breaking the Bank

DAYTON -- With our first official heat wave of the summer, you can expect your air conditioning to be running almost non-stop.

It takes a lot more energy from DP&L to cool off your home, but there are ways to make sure you aren't breaking the bank in this heat.

"The sun is very hot, it's just blazing down on everybody," said Dana Patton. "This seems like this has really been the first time that it's been this hot."

Keeping cool in this hot weather is easy if you have a splash park like the Activity Center Park in Centerville, but keeping your home cool isn't.

"As those temperatures stay up throughout the week, we'll see that usage continue to creep up," said Tom Tatham, director of operations for DP&L. "Facilities get hotter, attics get hotter, and that heat doesn't really go down or escape during the night."

But turning your thermostat down won't solve your problem.

In fact, it'll increase your monthly electric bill.

"Usually it's about $60, so it'll be about $100 just for the air conditioning in the summer," said Patton.

One of the best things you can do is seal air leaks around your doors and windows.

"About half of you energy comes from heating and cooling your home, so weatherization can really pay off," said Tatham.

Also, keeping your blinds and drapes closed during the day can help keep the heat out of your home.

Use a fan rather than your A/C to circulate the air in your home, it uses a lot less energy.

One concern a lot of people have when it gets this hot is if the power company can handle all the extra usage.

According to DP&L, they are more than ready for the spike and ensure you will have power.
