DAYTON -- The local unit of the NAACP is planning a vigil on Saturday to urge the U.S. Department of Justice to file civil rights charges against George Zimmerman.
Zimmerman was found not guilty July 13 in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
Martin was killed while walking home from a store in a predominantly white neighborhood. Zimmerman claims the shooting was in self-defense.
âThe most fundamental of civil rights â the right to life - was violated the night Mr. Zimmerman stalked and then took the life of Trayvon Martin," Dayton NAACP President Derrick L. Foward said in a statement. "This week, during the NAACP 104th Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida, we heard astonishing speeches from Martin Luther King III, Al Sharpton and the lawyers of Trayvonâs parents regarding this egregious violation. With the acquittal of George Zimmerman, itâs time for the DOJ to act!â
The vigil will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in front of the Federal Building, 200 W. Second St., in Downtown Dayton.
